eBay item specifics for used auto parts and the blank one that costs you.
After a buyer picks their vehicle, they narrow the results with item specifics: brand, part number, placement. A listing with those fields blank drops out of the filtered results, however good its title and photos.
What item specifics are
Item specifics are the labelled fields on a listing, such as Brand, Manufacturer Part Number and Placement on Vehicle. eBay shows them on the listing, uses them in search, and lets buyers filter by them. Some are required in a category, and the listing will not go up without them. The rest are recommended, and every one left blank is a filter the listing cannot appear in.
The ones that matter for used parts
-
Brand
For an original part off a vehicle, the brand is the vehicle's make. It is the first filter many buyers use.
-
Manufacturer Part Number
The part's own number, as it is printed on the part or its label.
-
Placement on Vehicle
Front or rear, left or right, upper or lower. For parts that come in pairs, it is the filter that keeps the wrong side off the buyer's screen.
-
Mileage
For engines and transmissions, where the category takes it: the donor's mileage, one of the first things a powertrain buyer filters by.
Every part number, not just one
Many parts carry more than one number: the manufacturer's own, a superseded number, the same part under another badge. In most parts categories the OE/OEM Part Number specific accepts several values, so put them all in. A buyer searching any one of them then finds the listing through its item specifics, not only through a line in the description.
The blank one: Country of Origin
Leave Country of Origin blank and eBay may not leave it blank. It can fill the field in itself from the brand and part number, and show the result as the seller's own statement. We have seen a genuine original mirror, off a vehicle assembled in the United States, listed as made in Taiwan, because an aftermarket part shared its number. A buyer who reads that sees a copy, not the original part you are selling.
The fix is to set it yourself. For an original part, the donor vehicle's VIN is the best evidence you have: its first characters identify the manufacturer and the country the vehicle was built in, which is where the car was assembled, not always where the part was made. When the VIN cannot say, leave the field out rather than guess.
Use eBay's own values
Some item specifics take free text; others accept only the values on eBay's own list for that category, and a value spelled any other way is not recognised. Pick from the list where there is one, and keep free-text values to the facts printed on the part. Condition is not an item specific: it is its own field, with a condition description where the wear belongs.
How YardWyre does it
YardWyre fills the item specifics from the part record on every listing: Brand, the manufacturer part number, every OE/OEM number on file for the part, and the donor's mileage where it is recorded. Country of Origin is set from the donor VIN's manufacturer code, and left out when the VIN cannot say, never guessed. See eBay listing software for salvage yards.
How it worksQuestions yards ask
What are item specifics on eBay?
Labelled fields on a listing, such as Brand, Manufacturer Part Number and Placement on Vehicle. Buyers filter search results by them, and some are required in each category.
Which item specifics matter most for used auto parts?
Brand, the part numbers, Placement on Vehicle for parts that come in pairs, and mileage for engines and transmissions.
Can I put more than one part number in the item specifics?
Yes. In most parts categories the OE/OEM Part Number field accepts several values, so a buyer searching any of them finds the listing.
Why does my listing show the wrong Country of Origin?
If the field is left blank, eBay can fill it in from the brand and part number, and that guess can be wrong. Set it yourself, from the donor vehicle's VIN.
Is condition an item specific?
No. Condition is its own field on the listing, with a condition description where you describe the wear.
